Swaffham Prior Community Heat Project

Swaffham Prior Community Heat Scheme

Hello and welcome to the first newsletter for the Swaffham Prior Community Heat Scheme! There has been a lot of progress over the past few months and we would love to take this opportunity to update you on the work to date between the Community Land Trust (CLT), Cambridgeshire County Council and Bouygues Energies & Services. We are excited by the interest the scheme has already created, as shown by the recent press coverage in the  Newmarket Journal as well as the Cambridge Independent, and look forward to working closely with you all in the future on this innovative and ambitious project!

What is the ‘Swaffham Prior Community Heat Scheme’?

The use of oil as an energy source is not easy to budget for due to fluctuating costs, the tanks are an inconvenience and increasingly people are put off buying and renting homes with oil heating systems. Oil is also not environmentally sustainable, especially in the long term.

In replacement, a highly sustainable ground source district heat scheme is proposed. This harnesses natural heat from underground through a network of insulated pipes, to deliver hot water to houses for central heating and general hot water needs. Also included in the scheme will be the primary school, village hall, churches and pub.

So far…

Following on from an initial £20k to see if the project could be developed, a further £40,200 government grant via the HNDU scheme has been successful awarded to the CLT in order to carry out the second step, a Technical Economic Feasibility Study (TEFS).

Bouygues Energies & Services, whom the Council maintain an excellent relationship with, have been appointed to carry out the TEFS. This involves further assessment and investigations into the viability of the scheme, and will enable us to better answer technical and financial questions.

After a successful presentation and meeting with Mayor James Palmer, £20,000 grant funding has been secured from the Combined Authority.

There is now significant national & regional interest in the project due to the retrofit concept onto an existing village.

How can you help?

In order for Bouygues Energies & Services to carry out further feasibility work into the scheme, we need to find out more about your boiler! Please send over a picture of your boiler, with the age and make, as well as an approximation of how much oil you use each year to: MLEI@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Save the date!

On Tuesday 2nd October 19:30-21:30 a presentation will be held between the CLT, the County Council and Bouygues Energies & Services in Swaffham Prior Village Hall. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the scheme and ask any questions. Further information will be available closer to the date.
