Energy performance retrofit programme for schools takes off

Published: Friday, 12th December 2014

The MLEI Cambridgeshire is delighted to report that since we appointed Bouygues Energies and Services in August as our Energy Performance Delivery Partner, the retrofit programme has gone from strength to strength.

Six Cambridgeshire schools have already gone through to the ‘Investment Grade Proposal’ stage of the project, meaning they will now be subject to a more detailed assessment and development of a full business case for investment.

Together these six schools – 3 primaries, 1 special school and 2 secondary schools - represent a potential total investment of approx. £1.25M, and energy savings of almost 1600MWh per year.

Mike Staplehurst, Governor at Milton CofE Primary School said, 'We are thrilled to participate and benefit from the MLEI Retrofit Programme.  Subject to the detailed business case, we hope to realise a significant reduction in the use of energy in the school and improve the classroom & school environment with the installation of measures including Solar PV panels, lighting upgrades and a new heating systems.

'Improving the school environment will really benefit pupils, staff and the wider community that use the school premises.  Bouygues and the County Council have worked with the Governors on the complexities of the scheme to ensure the right choice of measures for the School and we look forward to receiving our Investment Grade Proposal.'

As well as these 6 schools, a further 45 site assessments have been completed on schools, and other County sites and 20 Desk Top Assessments – the preliminary business case for investment - have been checked, approved and issued.

A particularly exciting development is the level of interest we’ve had from other public sector bodies.  Fenland District Council were the first additional body to sign up, looking for improvements to their leisure centres. Others organisations are lined up.

For schools and other organisations interested in accessing the Energy Performance Retrofit Programme, further information will be available on this site in due course.  In the meantime any schools that expressed an interest earlier in the year but have not received a date for an initial assessment should contact MLEI Business Development Manager, Ron D’Souza on ron.d’souza@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or 01223 699448.
